Tabor Community Services’ Shelter to Independent Living (STIL) Program has concluded its 2018-19 program year having served 312 Lancaster County residents, including 178 children, experiencing homelessness. 82% ended their homelessness, having achieved their goal of obtaining permanent housing. The STIL program uses the proven “rapid re-housing” approach to help Lancaster County individuals, couples, and families experiencing homelessness to obtain permanent housing and self-sufficiency. STIL social workers offer assistance setting and reaching goals, support individuals locate housing, and advocate with landlords for a successful tenant-landlord relationship.
In the words of one of Tabor’s STIL clients, “Tabor came into my life like an angel, helping me and my children get a stable home…two years later, we’ve built so many good memories in it.” The STIL program was funded in part by a $20,000 grant from the Arconic Foundation in 2018-19. Arconic, a global leader in aluminum sheet and plate for the aerospace industry and a market leader in providing aluminum sheet to the North American automotive market, has an Operations facility located in Lancaster. The support from Arconic Foundation complements significant investment in the STIL program from Lanc Co My Home, the Lancaster County Homelessness Coalition, a network of more than 80 organizations working to ensure that homelessness is rare, brief, and non-recurring. Says Michael McKenna, Tabor’s president, “The magnitude of the affordable housing and homelessness crises in our community is such that it truly requires all hands on deck. Private investment from generous partners like Arconic coupled with public support through Lanc Co My Home enables Tabor to create pathways to housing security for hundreds of our neighbors each year.”
