A Resilient Spirit

Jeff has experienced many setbacks and hardships in life, but his resilient spirit and positive attitude have been inspiring. As a public servant, Jeff worked at Neffsville Fire Company for 35 years before retiring due to health issues. Today, Jeff enjoys helping his local VFW with their fundraising activities.

Unfortunately, he suffers from short-term memory loss caused by a series of strokes, has a loss of ambulatory skills, and had both legs amputated between 2011 and 2012. Jeff was living in a small apartment in Lititz; it wasn't handicapped-accessible. He contacted Barbara at Tabor who referred him to an agency to help him find the apartment he needed. However, he was told there were no apartments available for three months, and he was unable to get the necessary application to apply for an apartment. Barbara interceded, getting Jeff the necessary paperwork that he completed. He moved into his new apartment a week later. For five years he has lived in his two-bedroom apartment with a washer and dryer, handicapped-accessible bathroom, and all the amenities he needs.

Since contacting Tabor, Jeff has received financial counseling through Tabor's Ann B. Barshinger Financial Empowerment Center. He also regularly receives assistance from Teresa, a caseworker in Supportive Services at Tabor. She has helped Jeff find the resources needed to help purchase a motorized wheelchair, assisted him and his brother handling the hospital bills from his July stay when he had another stroke, resumed the Meals on Wheels program, and helped him get a Life Alert necklace.

He exclaims, “Teresa is always there when I need her. She and my brother are responsible for where I am today.” Seeing Jeff face unimaginable situations and difficulties, Teresa is impressed and inspired as she continues supporting Jeff's journey. “ Jeff never complains. It has been a privilege helping him.”

To anyone facing hardships like Jeff, he says, “Call Tabor. Talk about your situation, do the work you need to do to get through it. Tabor will help you. And try to make the best of what you have."
