Beginning a New Life

Randi is a single mother of two children. She has a 12-year-old daughter and a 9-year-old son. Her daughter lives with her, and her son lives with his father. In the past, she has admittedly made some poor decisions, but is driven to create a brighter future for herself and her children. She understands that in order for this to happen, she must make serious changes in her life.

Caught in a cycle of drug and alcohol abuse, Randi was incarcerated a few times over the past several years. Her life became a revolving door in and out of prison.

She knew that she couldn’t continue to surround herself with individuals who would negatively influence her life. She didn’t want to end up in situations that could lead to old habits with similar, negative outcomes. In looking at what she could do or where she could go, she learned about Beth Shalom from a prison counselor.

Upon her recent release, Randi and her daughter stayed with her parents for a month. Wanting to take a more drastic approach to altering her lifestyle, she contacted Lenara, Beth Shalom’s program coordinator and completed an application to enroll in the program. She was accepted and within a week moved into an apartment at Beth Shalom with her daughter.

Having recently moved to Beth Shalom, Randi meets with Lenara once a week, is making a list of goals, and is learning how to budget. She is maintaining her sobriety, working full-time, and attending Bible study and church. These lifestyle changes and skills are critical to her continued recovery. Randi likes the structure and support that Beth Shalom provides and is eager to participate in Tabor’s other programs, like credit counseling through The Ann B. Barshinger Financial Empowerment Center.

Looking at a brighter future, Randi’s goals are to stay sober, support her children, and live an independent, self-sufficient life. She wants her children to learn from her mistakes, to do well in school, and continue their education beyond high school.

When asked what she would like people to know about her, Randi responds, “I’m a good person who made some bad decisions. But I’ve changed, and I know I will be successful.” She is grateful to have a place like Beth Shalom to continue her pursuit of a better life, grow in her faith, and is thankful that there are supporters who make all this possible.
