Tabor Community Services’ Shelter to Independent Living Program ends homelessness for 256 Lancaster

Tabor Community Services’ Shelter to Independent Living (STIL) Program has concluded its 2018-19 program year having served 312 Lancaster County residents, including 178 children, experiencing homelessness. 82% ended their homelessness, having achieved their goal of obtaining permanent housing. The STIL program uses the proven “rapid re-housing” approach to help Lancaster County individuals, couples, and families experiencing homelessness to obtain permanent housing and self-sufficiency. STIL social workers offer assistance setting and reaching goals, support individuals locate housing, and advocate with landlords for a successful tenant-landlord relationship. Marie and Richard, 89 and 93-years-old respectively, have been married 70 years. He is a World War II veteran who owned his own business, Lancaster County Farms. Marie was a self-taught artist in Theorem painting and sold her artwork at the Kutztown Folk Festival every year. In 1992, Richard had a heart attack and after living in Bird-in-Hand for 59 years, they needed to downsize. Today, on a very limited income, Marie and Richard live in an apartment owned by Community Basics, Inc. (CBI). CBI provides affordable housing for families and individuals in Lancaster County and surrounding areas. Tabor provides supportive services at six of CBI’s locations. Background I am from a little town called Perkasie, about 40 minutes from Philadelphia. Moved to the Lancaster County to go to university at Millersville after completing 2 years at the Bucks County Community College. In May 2018, I graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work and have been putting it to work here at Tabor ever since. How did you get involved with Tabor? What do you do at Tabor?
