Family Self-Sufficiency
Family Self-Sufficiency encourages
and empowers families on Section 8 Rental Assistance to become self-sufficient.
Most families choose homeownership as one of their self-sufficiency
goals. In this case the counselor helps them develop a plan for
that and begins educating them on the rights and responsibilities
of homeownership.
As the family increases their
income during the program, the 30% of the income they pay for rent
increases, thus decreasing the amount the government must pay. The
savings the government gains is put in an escrow account the recipient
can receive after graduating.
